  • Corporations are as important as politicians in American Politics.

  • You know what party a politician supports. Do you know which political party a company supports?

  • ChooseTheBlue tells you what corporations donated to political parties.

  • If each American who voted for John Kerry spends $100 in 2005 on a Blue company instead of a Red company, we can move $5 Billion away from Republican companies and add $5 Billion to the income of companies who donate to Democrats.

1947 U.N. votes for partition of Palestine

Despite strong Arab opposition, the United Nations votes for the partition of Palestine and the creation of an independent Jewish state.

The modern conflict between Jews and Arabs in Palestine dates back to the 1910s, when both groups laid claim to the British-controlled territory. The Jews were Zionists, recent emigrants from Europe and Russia who came to the ancient homeland of the Jews to establish a Jewish national state. The native Palestinian Arabs sought to stem Jewish immigration and set up a secular Palestinian state.

Beginning in 1929, Arabs and Jews openly fought in Palestine, and Britain attempted to limit Jewish immigration as a means of appeasing the Arabs. As a result of the Holocaust in Europe, many Jews illegally entered Palestine during World War II. Radical Jewish groups employed terrorism against British forces in Palestine, which they thought had betrayed the Zionist cause. At the end of World War II, in 1945, the United States took up the Zionist cause. Britain, unable to find a practical solution, referred the problem to the United Nations, which on November 29, 1947, voted to partition Palestine.

The Jews were to possess more than half of Palestine, though they made up less than half of Palestine's population. The Palestinian Arabs, aided by volunteers from other countries, fought the Zionist forces, but the Jews secured full control of their U.N.-allocated share of Palestine and also some Arab territory. On May 14, 1948, Britain withdrew with the expiration of its mandate, and the State of Israel was proclaimed by Jewish Agency Chairman David Ben-Gurion. The next day, forces from Egypt, Transjordan, Syria, Lebanon, and Iraq invaded.

The Israelis, though less well equipped, managed to fight off the Arabs and then seize key territories, such as Galilee, the Palestinian coast, and a strip of territory connecting the coastal region to the western section of Jerusalem. In 1949, U.N.-brokered cease-fires left the State of Israel in permanent control of those conquered areas. The departure of hundreds of thousands of Palestinian Arabs from Israel during the war left the country with a substantial Jewish majority.

Happy Thanksgiving Shoppers!

Today some friends are coming over .

I am smoking a 15 pound turkey on

my New Braunfels/ grill with my own pecan

wood. The turkey is coated with olive oil and

poultry seasoning , fresh garlic under the skin.

I am making mashed potatoes, cornbread dressing

green bean casserole and Dave Barry's recipe for

pumpkin pie here:

1. Using a dangerous knife, cut the top off a large pumpkin.

2. Inside you will find a mess of stringy, stanky, slimy pumpkin innards. Scoop these out and discard them.

3. Now discard the rest of the pumpkin,

"GO BUY ONE AT THE GROCERY"  because the simple truth, obvious to anybody with half a brain, is that NO PART of the pumpkin looks, smells or tastes ANYTHING like so-called ''pumpkin'' pie. This is why nobody actually makes ''pumpkin'' pie; everybody buys it at the supermarket. The question is: What does the supermarket put in there? The Food and Drug Administration is investigating this, and according to one informed source (Dan Rather) ``they think it's tofu.''

more:We'd rather eat turkey
Thanksgiving is that very special holiday when we take a break from our hectic everyday lives to spend quality time with our loved ones, rediscovering all the reasons why we don't actually live with them.

Darwin

Today in History:

DARWIN'S ORIGIN OF SPECIES PUBLISHED:
November 24, 1859

On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, a
groundbreaking scientific work by British naturalist Charles Darwin,
is published in England. Darwin's theory argued that organisms
gradually evolve through a process he called "natural selection." In
natural selection, organisms with genetic variations that suit their
environment tend to propagate more descendants than organisms of the
same species that lack the variation, thus influencing the overall
genetic makeup of the species.

Darwin, who was influenced by the work of French naturalist
Jean-Baptiste de Lamarck and the English economist Thomas Mathus,
acquired most of the evidence for his theory during a five-year
surveying expedition aboard the HMS Beagle in the 1830s. Visiting such
diverse places as the Galapagos Islands and New Zealand, Darwin
acquired an intimate knowledge of the flora, fauna, and geology of
many lands. This information, along with his studies in variation and
interbreeding after returning to England, proved invaluable in the
development of his theory of organic evolution.

The idea of organic evolution was not new. It had been suggested
earlier by, among others, Darwin's grandfather Erasmus Darwin, a
distinguished English scientist, and Lamarck, who in the early 19th
century drew the first evolutionary diagram--a ladder leading from
one-celled organisms to man. However, it was not until Darwin that
science presented a practical explanation for the phenomenon of
evolution.

Darwin had formulated his theory of natural selection by 1844, but he
was wary to reveal his thesis to the public because it so obviously
contradicted the biblical account of creation. In 1858, with Darwin
still remaining silent about his findings, the British naturalist
Alfred Russel Wallace independently published a paper that essentially
summarized his theory. Darwin and Wallace gave a joint lecture on
evolution before the Linnean Society of London in July 1858, and
Darwin prepared On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection
for publication.

Published on November 24, 1859, Origin of Species sold out
immediately. Most scientists quickly embraced the theory that solved
so many puzzles of biological science, but orthodox Christians
condemned the work as heresy. Controversy over Darwin's ideas deepened
with the publication of The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation
to Sex (1871), in which he presented evidence of man's evolution from
apes.

By the time of Darwin's death in 1882, his theory of evolution was
generally accepted. In honor of his scientific work, he was buried in
Westminster Abbey beside kings, queens, and other illustrious figures
from British history. Subsequent developments in genetics and
molecular biology led to modifications in accepted evolutionary
theory, but Darwin's ideas remain central to the field.

Today in History:

JOHN F. KENNEDY ASSASSINATED:
November 22, 1963

John Fitzgerald Kennedy, the 35th president of the United States, is
assassinated while traveling through Dallas, Texas, in an open-top
convertible.

First lady Jacqueline Kennedy rarely accompanied her husband on
political outings, but she was beside him, along with Texas Governor
John Connally and his wife, for a 10-mile motorcade through the
streets of downtown Dallas on November 22. Sitting in a Lincoln
convertible, the Kennedys and Connallys waved at the large and
enthusiastic crowds gathered along the parade route. As their vehicle
passed the Texas School Book Depository Building at 12:30 p.m., Lee
Harvey Oswald allegedly fired three shots from the sixth floor,
fatally wounding President Kennedy and seriously injuring Governor
Connally. Kennedy was pronounced dead 30 minutes later at Dallas'
Parkland Hospital. He was 46.

Vice President Lyndon Johnson, who was three cars behind President
Kennedy in the motorcade, was sworn in as the 36th president of the
United States at 2:39 p.m. He took the presidential oath of office
aboard Air Force One as it sat on the runway at Dallas Love Field
airport. The swearing in was witnessed by some 30 people, including
Jacqueline Kennedy, who was still wearing clothes stained with her
husband's blood. Seven minutes later, the presidential jet took off
for Washington.

The next day, November 23, President Johnson issued his first
proclamation, declaring November 25 to be a day of national mourning
for the slain president. On that Monday, hundreds of thousands of
people lined the streets of Washington to watch a horse-drawn caisson
bear Kennedy's body from the Capitol Rotunda to St. Matthew's Catholic
Cathedral for a requiem Mass. The solemn procession then continued on
to Arlington National Cemetery, where leaders of 99 nations gathered
for the state funeral. Kennedy was buried with full military honors on
a slope below Arlington House, where an eternal flame was lit by his
widow to forever mark the grave.

Lee Harvey Oswald, born in New Orleans in 1939, joined the U.S.
Marines in 1956. He was discharged in 1959 and nine days later left
for the Soviet Union, where he tried unsuccessfully to become a
citizen. He worked in Minsk and married a Soviet woman and in 1962 was
allowed to return to the United States with his wife and infant
daughter. In early 1963, he bought a .38 revolver and rifle with a
telescopic sight by mail order, and on April 10 in Dallas he allegedly
shot at and missed former U.S. Army general Edwin Walker, a figure
known for his extreme right-wing views. Later that month, Oswald went
to New Orleans and founded a branch of the Fair Play for Cuba
Committee, a pro-Castro organization. In September 1963, he went to
Mexico City, where investigators allege that he attempted to secure a
visa to travel to Cuba or return to the USSR. In October, he returned
to Dallas and took a job at the Texas School Book Depository Building.

Less than an hour after Kennedy was shot, Oswald killed a policeman
who questioned him on the street near his rooming house in Dallas.
Thirty minutes later, Oswald was arrested in a movie theater by police
responding to reports of a suspect. He was formally arraigned on
November 23 for the murders of President Kennedy and Officer J.D.
Tippit.

On November 24, Oswald was brought to the basement of the Dallas
police headquarters on his way to a more secure county jail. A crowd
of police and press with live television cameras rolling gathered to
witness his departure. As Oswald came into the room, Jack Ruby emerged
from the crowd and fatally wounded him with a single shot from a
concealed .38 revolver. Ruby, who was immediately detained, claimed
that rage at Kennedy's murder was the motive for his action. Some
called him a hero, but he was nonetheless charged with first-degree
murder.

Jack Ruby, originally known as Jacob Rubenstein, operated strip joints
and dance halls in Dallas and had minor connections to organized
crime. He features prominently in Kennedy-assassination theories, and
many believe he killed Oswald to keep him from revealing a larger
conspiracy. In his trial, Ruby denied the allegation and pleaded
innocent on the grounds that his great grief over Kennedy's murder had
caused him to suffer "psychomotor epilepsy" and shoot Oswald
unconsciously. The jury found Ruby guilty of "murder with malice" and
sentenced him to die.

In October 1966, the Texas Court of Appeals reversed the decision on
the grounds of improper admission of testimony and the fact that Ruby
could not have received a fair trial in Dallas at the time. In January
1967, while awaiting a new trial, to be held in Wichita Falls, Ruby
died of lung cancer in a Dallas hospital.

The official Warren Commission report of 1964 concluded that neither
Oswald nor Ruby were part of a larger conspiracy, either domestic or
international, to assassinate President Kennedy. Despite its seemingly
firm conclusions, the report failed to silence conspiracy theories
surrounding the event, and in 1978 the House Select Committee on
Assassinations concluded in a preliminary report that Kennedy was
"probably assassinated as a result of a conspiracy" that may have
involved multiple shooters and organized crime. The committee's
findings, as with those of the Warren Commission, continue to be
widely disputed.

On Nov. 22, 1963, President Kennedy was assassinated while riding in a motorcade in Dallas. Texas

TODAY IN HISTORY:

MASS SUICIDE IN JONESTOWN:
November 18, 1978

People's Temple leader Jim Jones leads hundreds of his followers in a
mass murder-suicide at their agricultural commune in remote
northwestern Guyana. The few cult members who refused to take the
cyanide-laced fruit-flavored concoction were either forced to do so at
gunpoint or shot as they fled. The final death toll was 913, including
276 children.

Jim Jones was a charismatic churchman who founded the People's Temple,
a Christian sect, in Indianapolis in the 1950s. He preached against
racism, and his integrated congregation attracted mostly African
Americans. In 1965, he moved the group to northern California,
settling in Ukiah and after 1971 in San Francisco. In the 1970s, his
church was accused by the press of financial fraud, physical abuse of
its members, and mistreatment of children. In response to the mounting
criticism, Jones led several hundred of his followers to South America
in 1977 and set up a utopian agricultural settlement called Jonestown
in the jungle of Guyana.

A year later, a group of ex-members convinced U.S. Congressman Leo
Ryan, a Democrat of California, to travel to Jonestown and investigate
the commune. On November 17, 1978, Ryan arrived in Jonestown with a
group of journalists and other observers. At first the visit went
well, but the next day, as Ryan's group was about to leave, several
People's Church members approached members of the group and asked them
for passage out of Guyana. Jones became distressed at the defection of
his members, and one of Jones' lieutenants attacked Ryan with a knife.
Ryan escaped from the incident unharmed, but Jones then ordered Ryan
and his companions ambushed and killed at the airstrip as they
attempted to leave. The congressman and four others were murdered as
they attempted to board their charter planes.

Back in Jonestown, Jones directed his followers in a mass suicide in a
clearing in the town. With Jones exhorting the "beauty of dying" over
a loudspeaker, hundreds drank a lethal cyanide and Kool-Aid drink.
Those who tried to escape were chased down and shot by Jones'
lieutenants. Jones died of a gunshot wound in the head, probably
self-inflicted. Guyanese troops, alerted by a cult member who escaped,
reached Jonestown the next day. Only a dozen or so followers survived,
hidden in the jungle. Most of the 913 dead were lying side by side in
the clearing where Jones had preached to them for the last time.

THIS WEEKS SCAM ALERT
Unclaimed Money Scams

Who wouldn't want to find free or unclaimed money that
legitimately belongs to you? Free or unclaimed money is very
appealing to many people -- especially if it's legitimate.  ;-)

The interesting thing is that there really is unclaimed money
and unclaimed funds available -- in fact, there are huge
amounts of it. Much of it belongs to people who have passed
away. And much of it is just forgotten.

However, finding free or unclaimed money on the Net is one of
the oldest scams in the book, so red flags should go off
whenever you read anything about this.

For example, there is a very popular unclaimed money scam going
around right now via email. One such email starts off: "There's
over 400 billion dollars in unclaimed money in North America --
and some of it belongs to you!"

(How do they know?)

Another email starts off: "You are owed money. Nine out of ten
people over the age of 25 are owed money they didn't know they
had, and you are one of them!"

(Again, how do they know?)

These emails go on to claim that Oprah recently did a show on
this unclaimed money phenomenon, and that it's been documented
that '9 out of 10 people are owed money' by the country's banks
and other financial institutes.

Finally, comes the pitch -- the company that's sending you the
email will, of course, help you locate your unclaimed money.
All you need to do is call this particular 1-809 number 'right
now'!

The company claims that they'll do a 'search' for free, and that
you don't have to pay them anything until they've found your
money. And even then, they'll only take 15%.

What they DON'T tell you is that they're going to make money on
that 1-809 call they've convinced you to make, for starters.

In fact, this is one the most popular 809 phone scams going on
right now. You can read more about 809 scams here:

==> http://www.scambusters.org/809Scam.html

They also don't tell you that they'll send you a 'refined'
search that includes your last name and first initial in an
official looking database list, and then they'll tell you that
although they can't guarantee it's you, you'll need to pay a fee
(or perhaps buy a membership) before they'll check any further.

If you'd like to read a popular version of this unclaimed money
and unclaimed funds scam email that's going around, visit:

==> http://www.scambusters.org/unclaimed-funds.html

Besides the 809 scam, what are the other fraudulent aspects of
the types of email?

First, they are spaham (intentionally misspelled to get through
the filters), so you know that the chance is at least 95% that
they are fraudulent.

Second, almost all want to charge you a fee to help you reclaim
the money -- something you can do for free for yourself (see
below).

Others charge the fee even if they simply locate the $2.64 you
left behind in a paper route account when you were 12. And
still others are aimed at getting your personal information,
most likely to get bank account numbers or other financial
information in order to commit identity theft.

The good news is that you can do this research for free -- and
see if there is really any unclaimed money or property owed to
you.

And you can do this without paying any fees!

Here are the state-sanctioned unclaimed funds registries...

National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators
==> http://www.unclaimed.org/
(Click on the link for 'Owners' and then click on the link to
'Find Property' -- this will let you select your state.)

Missing Money
==> http://www.missingmoney.com/

Both of these sites link you to databases in each state where
you can do the search online.

Using unclaimed.org, we actually found a couple of hundred
dollars of funds that belonged to Audri's father after he
passed away. So, we can vouch that there is actually unclaimed
money to be found.  ;-)

Good luck finding unclaimed money that might belong to you!

Sinkers And Floaters

http://dailyconfession.com/display.asp?CID=66735

Okay, this was my first day with my date.

It started out perfectly. I spent hours getting ready for dinner at my favorite Mexican restaurant, and dinner went extremely well. I ordered my usual, shrimp cocktail and spicy salsa and tortilla chips.

We followed dinner with a romantic swim in my new pool. Things were going great, it was like a Kodak moment, just like I've always dreamed. But then, things took a turn for the worse, and I DO mean WORSE.

I know I might get a bad response, but in my opinion, EVERYONE pees in the pool. So as I was being as discreet as I could, I relieved myself in the presence of my date. I know that doesn't sound so bad, but right at that moment, the Mexican food came back to haunt me and I exploded in the pool.

My food remnants were FLOATING around my horrified date, who was so disgusted, he puked right at the poolside, and jumped out.

Needless to say, I never saw or talked to him again.

I've learned my lesson about swimming after I eat Mexican food.

On This day in History

November 6

1860 Abraham Lincoln elected president

Abraham Lincoln is elected the 16th president of the United States over a deeply divided Democratic Party, becoming the first Republican to win the presidency. Lincoln received only 40 percent of the popular vote but handily defeated the three other candidates: Southern Democrat John C. Breckinridge, Constitutional Union candidate John Bell, and Northern Democrat Stephen Douglas, a U.S. senator for Illinois.

Lincoln, a Kentucky-born lawyer and former Whig representative to Congress, first gained national stature during his campaign against Stephen Douglas of Illinois for a U.S. Senate seat in 1858. The senatorial campaign featured a remarkable series of public encounters on the slavery issue, known as the Lincoln-Douglas debates, in which Lincoln argued against the spread of slavery, while Douglas maintained that each territory should have the right to decide whether it would become free or slave. Lincoln lost the Senate race, but his campaign brought national attention to the young Republican Party. In 1860, Lincoln won the party's presidential nomination.

In the November 1860 election, Lincoln again faced Douglas, who represented the Northern faction of a heavily divided Democratic Party, as well as Breckinridge and Bell. The announcement of Lincoln's victory signaled the secession of the Southern states, which since the beginning of the year had been publicly threatening secession if the Republicans gained the White House.

By the time of Lincoln's inauguration on March 4, 1861, seven states had seceded, and the Confederate States of America had been formally established, with Jefferson Davis as its elected president. One month later, the American Civil War began when Confederate forces under General P.G.T. Beauregard opened fire on Union-held Fort Sumter in South Carolina. In 1863, as the tide turned against the Confederacy, Lincoln emancipated the slaves and in 1864 won reelection. In April 1865, he was assassinated by Confederate sympathizer John Wilkes Booth at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C. The attack came only five days after the American Civil War effectively ended with the surrender of Confederate General Robert E. Lee at Appomattox.

For preserving the Union and bringing an end to slavery, and for his unique character and powerful oratory, Lincoln is hailed as one of the greatest American presidents.

Vote, No Matter What
Especially in the post-2000 political world, every vote counts. Including the ones that already feel counted.

KNOW THE CANDIDATES: Time is up! It's time to make your final voting decisions. The League of Women Voters can help with its interactive election map. Enter your zip code and find out all the information you need on elections and issues in your district. The site, designed to "create a more educated and engaged electorate," provides information for presidential, congressional and local elections in individual districts.

KNOW WHERE YOU'RE GOING: The next step is, of course, knowing where to go. The website www.mypollingplace.com has a polling place locator to help you find your voting booth. If that site is busy, call your state's elections officials; the group New Voters' Project provides a handy list of phone numbers for each state.

BRING I.D.: Avoid problems – bring your I.D. The rules vary in different states. Also, poll workers are often confused about the law and may turn away voters by mistake. The the Center for American Progress, in a joint statement with other progressive groups, recommends, "The most preferable form is a current government-issued photo ID such as a driver's license or a passport. Voters who do not have this should bring other types of valid photo ID, or other documentation showing the voter's name and address, such as a bank statement or utility bill. Additionally, several states may require proof of citizenship in the form of a voter's naturalization certificate."

KNOW WHO TO CALL FOR HELP: The Election Protection Coalition is ready to provide help to voters on Election Day. Voters needing assistance can call the toll-free number 1-866-OUR-VOTE. Multi-lingual assistance, including Spanish, will be available to callers. The hotlines will be open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. PST.

READ YOUR RIGHTS: Want to know your rights? People For The American Way has a list of states with Voters Bills of Rights. Voters can find their state and click either on a short version, which explains their rights in clear and simple language, or the longer version, which provides all of the state laws backing up each of those rights.

WHAT'S A PROVISIONAL BALLOT?: The New York Times explains, "No voter can be turned away in any state this year without being allowed to vote. If there is a question about your eligibility, you must be allowed to vote on a provisional ballot, the validity of which will be determined later. But if you are entitled to vote on a regular ballot, you should insist on doing so, since a provisional ballot may be disqualified later on a technicality."

BRING A BOOK: Be prepared – the line may be long at your polling place. To keep yourself occupied, bring along a book or a magazine. Or you could print out old Progress Reports and read them to your neighbors in line.

Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund

Dear Wildlife Supporter,

With so much riding on this election, your vote is crucial.

As the 2000 election demonstrated so dramatically, the margin between victory and defeat can be astonishingly thin, so high voter turnout is key. Did you know that the highest presidential voter turnouts of the last 30 years -- in the elections of 1976 and 1992 -- both installed Democratic challengers over a sitting Republican?

With your help, a massive voter turnout tomorrow will unseat a sitting president again.

It's time to put a strong conservationist like John Kerry in the White House, and early voting has already started in several states. If you have the opportunity to vote early, please vote now to make sure your voice is heard.

Otherwise, on November 2, remember to go to the polls and cast your vote for John Kerry in favor of wildlife protection, environmental conservation, and repudiation of the industry-led, anti-conservation policies of the Bush administration.

Thanks for all you do for the conservation of our environment,

Rodger Schlickeisen

President, Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund
