Can Bush Out-HooverHoover? ... W. Bush is the first president sinceHoover under whom there has been a net ... the Republicans' bluff by playing not one, but a pair of Hoover cards: ...
Some Republicans see the voting booth as a country club where a few people decide that others just don't belong. They reject the foundation of our democracy: we believe in the sacred principle of One Person, One Vote.
Now that fundamental right is under threat. Every day we hear of new GOP tactics to corrupt the system and prevent people from voting.
Our volunteers have made direct contact with voters in thousands of precincts. But the prospect of intimidation and legal manipulation grows every day. Please help us ensure that every American who wants to can get to the polls:
We finally started living up to the One Person, One Vote principle only a generation ago. For a hundred years after the Civil War our laws systematically blocked millions of people from voting. It took until 1965 to pass federal law that ended the schemes of Jim Crow.
We outlawed poll taxes and literacy tests because they are undemocratic. But those bad laws were made even worse by selective enforcement -- to discriminate against opponents of those in power.
The tactics today are the same as in the bad old days.
The 2000 election opened the eyes of the right-wing fringe that runs the Republican Party. When conservatives on the Supreme Court stopped votes from being counted in Florida, they saw an opportunity. They could again manipulate the legal system to justify denying people the right to vote.
Now we have a Republican in Ohio trying to throw out heavily Democratic new voter registrations because the paper isn't thick enough.
We have a Jeb Bush appointee in Florida drawing up a wildly inaccurate list of supposed "felons" that included thousands of innocent African-Americans -- but almost no Latinos (who are much more likely to vote Republican).
Republican officials in Pennsylvania tried to move polling places out of inner-city neighborhoods for "safety" reasons.
Right-wing Republicans question whether new voters -- particularly the young and the poor -- "deserve" to vote. They wonder out loud whether Americans who they think aren't "informed enough" or need a ballot in another language should be allowed to vote at all. Suggestions like these are disgusting and immoral.
They know that George Bush's failures have affected people who until now never gave politics a second thought. As a result, hundreds of thousands of Americans have registered to vote for the first time this year.
Republicans say they fear fraud. But they really fear defeat.
We cannot wait for judges or legislatures to stop them. We have to protect Americans at the polls on Election Day and defend against any attempt to tamper with our fundamental rights.
There are two ways you can help. Find your polling place and make sure that you and everyone you know votes:
As Americans prepare to choose their next president, FRONTLINE offers viewers a special, two-hour dual biography of the two candidates who hope to lead the nation for the next four years. The fifth installment in FRONTLINE's continuing election series pairs filmmaker Martin Smith and correspondent Nicholas Lemann, who go beyond sound bites and political rhetoric to explore how the candidates and their values have been shaped by family background, history, victory, and defeat. By eschewing political pundits in favor of insightful comments from friends, families, colleagues, political adversaries and top journalists who have incisively reported on the candidates, "The Choice 2004" offers viewers -- and voters -- a chance to see the candidates in a fresh light before the campaign reaches its climax on Election Day.
Forget the laundry. Let the dirty dishes pile up in the sink. Break out the TV dinners and tell the kids to do their own homework. On Election Day, we'll need every last person to pitch in.
If you're not able to travel to a swing state, please take some time to help call voters there and remind them to go to the polls. It's worth missing a few hours of work or school to help swing the most important election of our lifetimes. Together, we'll call half a million swing state friendly Kerry supporters who are unlikely to vote -- unless they hear from us. In this incredibly tight election, they could make all the difference.
Can you join us, by hosting or attending a phone party on November 2nd?
MoveOn volunteers have worked hard over the past months to find these battleground-state occasional voters. On Tuesday, we've got to make sure they vote! All you need to host a party is a computer and a printer. All you need to attend is a cell phone. Either way, we'll guide you through it step by step. And it's an efficient use of your time: you'll do more to beat Bush on this single day than any other. Late afternoon and evening are the most crucial hours. You could also host a lunch hour phone bank.
The party you host could just consist of you and your friends, or you can open it up to the whole MoveOn community. Every time MoveOn members have gotten together -- from bakesales to the opening night of Fahrenheit 9/11 -- we've had fun. On Election Day, we have one last chance to come together, meet each other, and play a key part in taking our country back.
And think about taking the day off from work or school. Play hooky for Kerry. What are you going to remember in 10 years? The memo you rewrote? The lecture you slept through? Or the way it felt watching the returns come in on Tuesday night, knowing that our national nightmare is coming to a close and you helped put us over the top?
Sign up to host a phone party or find one in your area now, at:

With only one more week before we cast our votes, Defenders Action Fund brings you an issue by issue comparison of the candidates' records. Share the records with your friends, and help put a strong conservationist -- John Kerry -- in the White House.
Detailed explanations of the candidates' records are posted at our site, http://www.defendersactionfund.org, or you can see below for a sample of the major issues at stake on this year's ballot. The evidence is clear: A vote for John Kerry is a vote to undo the damage inflicted on our environment by the policies of the Bush years.
GEORGE W. BUSH record
JOHN KERRY record
National Forests
George W. Bush has weakened protections for forest wildlife and proposed opening 58 million acres of our last wild National Forests to corporate lobbyists from timber, oil, and mining industries. Take action to save our forests!
Senator John Kerry has fought to protect America's National Forests from excessive logging and road building, and to free taxpayers from the burden of subsidizing these projects. Take action to save our forests!
Toxic Mercury
George W. Bush has proposed allowing power companies to delay the cleanup of toxic mercury emissions for at least a decade policies that put pregnant women and children at risk, as well as our fish and other wildlife.
Senator John Kerry supports rules that President Bush blocked which would reduce toxic mercury emissions by 90% over the next four years and protect pregnant women and children, not to mention our fish and other wildlife.
Artic National Wildlife Refuge
President George W. Bush has pushed to open the Arctic Refuge--America's greatest wildlife sanctuary--and millions of acres of other public lands to oil and gas drilling.
John Kerry led the Senate coalition that defeated Bush's plan to open the Arctic Refuge, while fighting to increase U.S. energy independence with improved fuel efficiency.
Clean Air Act
President Bush is requiring cleaner diesel fuel and cleaner diesel engines for heavy equipment, which will help reduce soot and smog pollution.
Senator Kerry also supports cleaner diesel fuel and was an original cosponsor of the Clean Power Act to force old, polluting power plants to clean up.
But the President has also proposed weakening key provisions of the Clean Air Act that require older polluting power plants, and other large industrial facilities to install modern pollution control technology.
He also helped negotiate one of the first international treaties on greenhouse gasses and global warming.
Remember to pass this e-mail along to help others make an informed choice on November 2.
Thanks for all you do for the conservation of our environment,

There's a particular kind of juice that may prove helpful for diabetics.
Early research indicates that tomato juice may reduce blood platelet clumping in people with type 2 diabetes. Blood platelet clumping could contribute to heart attack or stroke under certain conditions, and diabetics are at increased risk for such heart problems. If you add tomato juice to your diet, go for low-sodium varieties.

The Arab-dominated Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) announces a decision to cut oil exports to the United States and other nations that provided military aid to Israel in the Yom Kippur War of October 1973. According to OPEC, exports were to be reduced by 5 percent every month until Israel evacuated the territories occupied in the Arab-Israeli war of 1967. In December, a full oil embargo was imposed against the United States and several other countries, prompting a serious energy crisis in the United States and other nations dependent on foreign oil.
OPEC was founded in 1960 by Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, and Venezuela with the principle objective of raising the price of oil. Other Arab nations and Third World oil producers joined in the 1960s and early 1970s. For the first decade of its existence, OPEC had little impact on the price of oil, but by the early 1970s an increase in demand and the decline of U.S. oil production gave it more clout.
In October 1973, OPEC ministers were meeting in Vienna when Egypt and Syria (non-OPEC nations) launched a joint attack on Israel. After initial losses in the so-called Yom Kippur War, Israel began beating back the Arab gains with the help of a U.S. airlift of arms and other military assistance from the Netherlands and Denmark. By October 17, the tide had turned decisively against Egypt and Syria, and OPEC decided to use oil price increases as a political weapon against Israel and its allies. Israel, as expected, refused to withdraw from the occupied territories, and the price of oil increased by 70 percent. At OPEC's Tehran conference in December, oil prices were raised another 130 percent, and a total oil embargo was imposed on the United States, the Netherlands, and Denmark. Eventually, the price of oil quadrupled, causing a major energy crisis in the United States and Europe that included price gouging, gas shortages, and rationing.
In March 1974, the embargo against the United States was lifted after U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger succeeded in negotiating a military disengagement agreement between Syria and Israel. Oil prices, however, remained considerably higher than their mid-1973 level. OPEC cut production several more times in the 1970s, and by 1980 the price of crude oil was 10 times what it had been in 1973. By the early 1980s, however, the influence of OPEC on world oil prices began to decline; Western nations were successfully exploiting alternate sources of energy such as coal and nuclear power, and large, new oil fields had been tapped in the United States and other non-OPEC oil-producing nations.

MataHari. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. MataHari. MataHari (August 7, 1876–October 15, 1917) was the stage name of ...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
MATA HARI EXECUTED: October 15, 1917
Mata Hari, the archetype of the seductive female spy, is executed for espionage by a French firing squad at Vincennes outside of Paris.
She first came to Paris in 1905 and found fame as a performer of exotic Asian-inspired dances. She soon began touring all over Europe, telling the story of how she was born in a sacred Indian temple and taught ancient dances by a priestess who gave her the name Mata Hari, meaning "eye of the day" in Malay. In reality, Mata Hari was born in a small town in northern Holland in 1876, and her real name was Margaretha Geertruida Zelle. She acquired her superficial knowledge of Indian and Javanese dances when she lived for several years in Malaysia with her former husband, who was a Scot in the Dutch colonial army. Regardless of her authenticity, she packed dance halls and opera houses from Russia to France, mostly because her show consisted of her slowly stripping nude.
She became a famous courtesan, and with the outbreak of World War I her catalog of lovers began to include high-ranking military officers of various nationalities. In February 1917, French authorities arrested her for espionage and imprisoned her at St. Lazare Prison in Paris. In a military trial conducted in July, she was accused of revealing details of the Allies' new weapon, the tank, resulting in the deaths of thousands of soldiers. She was convicted and sentenced to death, and on October 15 she refused a blindfold and was shot to death by a firing squad at Vincennes.
There is some evidence that Mata Hari acted as a German spy, and for a time as a double agent for the French, but the Germans had written her off as an ineffective agent whose pillow talk had produced little intelligence of value. Her military trial was riddled with bias and circumstantial evidence, and it is probable that French authorities trumped her up as "the greatest woman spy of the century" as a distraction for the huge losses the French army was suffering on the western front. Her only real crimes may have been an elaborate stage fallacy and a weakness for men in uniform.
Fortunately, many people like to give with an open heart to help others in need.
Unfortunately, that means we've created a climate that's ripe for fake charity scams and scam artists. They know they can tug at our heartstrings -- and rake in the cash.
Fake charity scams often set up quasi-legitimate agencies so that, at first glance, they look real; they may also name themselves something similar to other legitimate charities.
They may even carry 'ID' in the name of the charity, complete with a logo.
These scam artists use all of the standard methods to collect 'donations' for their charity scams -- tables at the local mall, going door-to-door, email, and telemarketing.
All this makes charity scams harder to spot. However, here are 8 tips to help spot charity scams:
1. BE WARY of every opportunity that presents itself -- especially when it presents itself in the wake of some big disaster that gets lots of media attention.
2. Ask for the name, address, and phone number of the charity -- and whether or not it is registered. If the presenters claim that it is registered, get a registration number. The Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance offers information about national charities; you can call 703-276-0100 or go to their website:
They publish their standards for rating charities, and then rate over 600 different charities using these standards.
3. Verify with the office of the charity that there is indeed a campaign going on, or that they've authorized the charity drive that you're being invited to contribute to.
4. Don't ever donate cash if you can help it. Write a check to the charity -- not to the person standing in front of you. This also helps you document the donation for your records and for your tax return. And don't give out bank information!
5. Ask what percentage of your donation goes directly to the cause. Legitimate charities will have ready answers because they are used to the question. :-)
6. Get a receipt with the name of the charity on it.
7. Be especially cautious about getting a charity donation request by email. Most legitimate charities don't use email for their solicitations. (Some legitimate charities will email people who have donated before -- but never respond to requests where you've never donated.)
8. Be especially wary about charities that claim to be raising funds for the local police or firefighters. Check with them first!
9. Don't give in to pressure or 'guilt trips' about 'suggested donations' or 'requested minimum contributions.' Once you've determined that the charity is legitimate and you've decided you want to contribute, simply give what you can and want to give -- it will be appreciated.
10. The best way we know of to avoid charity scams is to decide IN ADVANCE (while you're doing your annual or monthly budget) which charities you'll support and CONTACT THEM. Then you can gracefully turn anyone else down who comes your way with hat in hand.
After sailing across the Atlantic Ocean, Italian explorer Christopher Columbus sights a Bahamian island, believing he has reached East Asia. His expedition went ashore the same day and claimed the land for Isabella and Ferdinand of Spain, who sponsored his attempt to find a western ocean route to China, India, and the fabled gold and spice islands of Asia.
Columbus was born in Genoa, Italy, in 1451. Little is known of his early life, but he worked as a seaman and then a maritime entrepreneur. He became obsessed with the possibility of pioneering a western sea route to Cathay (China), India, and the gold and spice islands of Asia. At the time, Europeans knew no direct sea route to southern Asia, and the route via Egypt and the Red Sea was closed to Europeans by the Ottoman Empire, as were many land routes. Contrary to popular legend, educated Europeans of Columbus' day did believe that the world was round, as argued by St. Isidore in the seventh century. However, Columbus, and most others, underestimated the world's size, calculating that East Asia must lie approximately where North America sits on the globe (they did not yet know that the Pacific Ocean existed).
With only the Atlantic Ocean, he thought, lying between Europe and the riches of the East Indies, Columbus met with King John II of Portugal and tried to persuade him to back his "Enterprise of the Indies," as he called his plan. He was rebuffed and went to Spain, where he was also rejected at least twice by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. However, after the Spanish conquest of the Moorish kingdom of Granada in January 1492, the Spanish monarchs, flush with victory, agreed to support his voyage.
On August 3, 1492, Columbus set sail from Palos, Spain, with three small ships, the Santa Marýa, the Pinta, and the Niýa. On October 12, the expedition reached land, probably Watling Island in the Bahamas. Later that month, Columbus sighted Cuba, which he thought was mainland China, and in December the expedition landed on Hispaniola, which Columbus thought might be Japan. He established a small colony there with 39 of his men. The explorer returned to Spain with gold, spices, and "Indian" captives in March 1493 and was received with the highest honors by the Spanish court. He was the first European to explore the Americas since the Vikings set up colonies in Greenland and Newfoundland in the 10th century.
During his lifetime, Columbus led a total of four expeditions to the New World, discovering various Caribbean islands, the Gulf of Mexico, and the South and Central American mainlands, but he never accomplished his original goal--a western ocean route to the great cities of Asia. Columbus died in Spain in 1506 without realizing the great scope of what he did achieve: He had discovered for Europe the New World, whose riches over the next century would help make Spain the wealthiest and most powerful nation on earth.
On Monday evening, you have a chance to see an unprecedented musical and political event that will never be repeated again. Some of the most talented American musicians of the last 20 years will share the stage at the Vote for Change grand finale concert -- Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Bonnie Raitt, R.E.M., Jackson Browne, the Dixie Chicks, Pearl Jam, and Dave Matthews Band among others. MoveOn PAC is presenting this amazing tour (proceeds go to ACT), and people nation-wide are hosting house parties where MoveOn members can watch together.
At these parties, we'll gather strength for the final push and get some important work done. At the parties, we'll each handwrite a few letters to swing state voters -- an integral part of our Leave No Voter Behind field program.
Will you join us for this historic event? Attend a house party near you, or host one, by clicking here:
There won't be a DVD or a television re-run -- this is your only chance to see these musicians perform together. The concert will air Monday evening on the Sundance Channel. If you have more than 60 cable channels or a satellite dish, you have Sundance, and we hope you'll consider hosting a party. Not all of our members have Sundance, but they really want to see this concert.
Before the show, we'll hold a special nationwide conference call to hear a message from Bruce Springsteen and other musicians. If you're going to host a party, you'll need a speakerphone or, better, a computer with speakers and high-speed cable or DSL Internet. If you don't have this, you can team up with a friend or neighbor. If you'll be a guest, we'll ask you to bring snacks or help clean up afterwards.
As we enjoy the music, we'll each write a few personal letters to voters in swing states who are undecided or unsure they'll make it to the polls. All the research shows the best way to motivate someone is to invest time in a personal contact. This increases people's commitment to vote. Handwritten letters are a powerful way to share why this election matters so much to us.
Monday's show will be politically potent, and it will also be a seminal moment in the history of rock and roll. Rock speaks to the heart and soul of American ideals. You won't get another chance to hear America's most respected musicians as they call upon our noblest dreams. An election concert like this has never happened before, and we hope the MoveOn community can be part of it.
Would you like to attend a house party and join one of the most exciting events of this election?
The countdown clock is ticking faster and faster — time is almost up. Once all the votes are cast and counted, will women's rights supporters be able to say we did everything we could to protect our future?
Election Day is only 25 days away. Scary, isn't it — the prospect of four more years under the same administration. And the next four years won't be just like the last — they'll be even worse! Voters for equality and justice must be out in full force at the polls. Let's show the prognosticators and pollsters what a real gender gap looks like!
We can do it, but we must switch our already noble efforts into high gear. And we can't do it without YOU. Read on to find out how you can truly make a difference on Nov. 2.
What You Can Do: Five Ways to Help Get Out the Vote
1. Take a week (or two) and join NOW PAC in one of our swing state Get-Out-the-Women's-Vote campaigns! If you'd like to join our efforts in Colorado, Florida, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Washington or Wisconsin, email Linda Berg or call 202-628-8669 x121. These states were chosen because they have NOW-endorsed candidates in close races, marriage discrimination initiatives on the ballot, or the need for a large number of women and progressive voters to turn out at the polls.
2. If you're in one of the above target states, plan a get-out-the-vote event and post it on the America Votes and America Coming Together calendars. If you're not in a battleground state, consider donating funds to NOW to support field organizers or contribute to progressive candidates in those states.
3 . It's not too late to join our exciting 10 for Change online campaign. The site is new and improved and packed full of election tips, articles and useful information. Some of the steps are even easier now!
4. Download, print and distribute NOW's Get Out the Vote flyer reminding women's rights supporters why they must go to the polls.
5. Sign and circulate NOW's petition demanding that the presidential candidates and congressional leaders stand up for women and girls. We need their leadership to end discrimination and restore women's rights by supporting initiatives and policies that promote health, safety and opportunity for all of our nation's girls, women and families, not just for the privileged few.
Still not convinced? 10 Reasons for Feminists and Progressives to Get Out the Vote:
Because the current administration and their right-wing, anti-women allies have:
Escalated discrimination and pay inequality
Rolled back women's educational opportunity gains
Expanded the gulf between rich and poor, and placed poor women and children at even greater risk
Promised to return poverty to the lives of retired workers by undermining Social Security
Severely restricted health care programs
Cut and misdirected funding for the Violence Against Women Act and mishandled incidents of sexual violence against military women
Nominated numerous regressive, anti-women federal judges
Closed women's offices and appointed government officials opposed to women's rights
Pushed discriminatory constitutional amendment banning marriage equality
Restricted women and girls' reproductive rights and access to contraception and health care
Fort Worth has received the honor as one of this decade’s "America’s Most Livable Communities", whose innovations in the increasingly popular creative economy have brought vitality and growth to their regions while not losing sight of quality of life issues for their residents.
Overseas Voting
Do you know an American who lives overseas? Want to make sure they can vote in 2004? Send them to our Overseas Vote website, where they can get the information they need and apply for a ballot.
Are you ready to elect John Kerry and John Edwards? Can't wait to defeat George W. Bush and Dick Cheney? Then do it now! You can vote today.
Just like in 2000, this year's presidential election could be decided by just a few votes in a handful of hotly contested states. The potential impact of votes cast in September and October is huge. That's why early voting is so important.
Many states allow you to vote early by absentee ballot or even in person. Voting now means you don't have to worry about getting to the polls on Election Day, when a busy day at the office or a child home with a cold might stand in your way. It's a great way to make sure your vote is counted. And you can learn how at the DNC's Early Vote Center:
You can request your ballot or find out if your district offers in-person early voting. We've also included answers to common questions, and provided contact information for your local election office.
